Bicycle Friendly University

The League of American Bicyclists has honored UCI with a Platinum-Level Bicycle Friendly University award, a prestigious achievement that only the most dedicated and innovative universities earn.
UCI demonstrates its commitment to bicyclists by setting standards to promote a safe biking environment, inspiring action to improve conditions for bicyclists, and encouraging others to join our welcoming biking community.
ENCOURAGEMENT
UCI Transportation has hosted many giveaways, rebates, and events throughout the year for bicyclists to win helpful tools and prizes.
Through the BikeUCI Ambassador Program, Anteaters dedicate their time to educate others on safe biking procedures and strengthen our bike community. This is a campus-wide volunteer program for cyclists to share the joys of riding, mentor and support new riders, create friendships, and most of all – have fun!
EDUCATION
UCI Transportation strives to educate all bicyclists on proper bike procedures, essential cycling skills, and more through free programs such as Smart Cycling, Commuting by Bike, Safety & Operations, Bike Friendly Driver, and Bicycle Security.
We are committed to teaching bicyclists how to ride safely with our Bicycle Education & Enforcement Program (B.E.E.P), a partnership between UCI Transportation and UCI Police. To further promote bike safety and security, B.E.E.P. provides complimentary bike registration service for UCI faculty, staff, and students.
ENGINEERING
UCI Transportation has supported our biking community by designating over 20 miles of lanes and zones around campus for biking. One unique feature that makes UCI stand out as a Bicycle Friendly University are the bike detection loops that trigger green lights at intersections, making biking safer and more convenient.

As the University of California, Irvine strives for a comfortable and safe environment for all people, our biking community has followed UCI’s mission for diversity. We strive for inclusivity in our biking community by offering free virtual Smart Cycling classes and providing Spanish translators at our events. Our commitment for equity, diversity and inclusion promises a safe, comfortable, and open campus for bicyclists of different backgrounds.
EVALUATION
Every year, more and more Anteaters join the biking community at UCI. As this number rises, so our efforts to improve and support biking on campus by evaluating new strategies to strengthen our cycling network. UCI Transportation helps our biking community by dedicating funds to educational bicycle events, demonstrations, and programs.
